7eme ART – CINEMA

Circus World

Revver is above all a Fashion & Art magazine. Fashionable people design it – expect the guy who writes on movies – with fashionable people for fashionable people. Gorgeous pictures of smart models casually posing on a roof top on page 10, outstanding street fashion looks from a DunHua lane on page 24, “show me what’s in your bag” on page 5 etc… Better than what you could have ever dreamt… And all of this just for the happy few who know where to find real fashion in Taipei…

But then, why doing this #12 issue on clowns??? Yes, of course, white clowns wear shiny clothes, look elegant and sophisticated and may have very high expectations… just like a Revver’s reader. But the comparison stops here. In the circus world, the white clown never comes alone. His inseparable companion, the Auguste, always follows him. You know the guy who turns every dish washing into a porcelain hecatomb and wears a red nose and shoes the size of your arm. For every Oliver Hardy, there is a Stan Laurel and what would be Dean Martin without Jerry Lewis?

Since this is supposed to be an article about cinema, we now need to find a film with clowns or on clowns or made by a clown or something like that, but aesthetic and sophisticated enough to satisfy the hard to please Revver reader. Let’s see what we have. The most popular clown movies are probably the horror ones. You know “It”, the 1990 TV-movie with Tim Curry based on Stephen King’s book or “Dear Mr. Gacy”, the true story of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, aka the Killer Clown. They are tons of similar films. But they fit better in a geek online fanzine than in Revver. I guess we should keep looking elsewhere…

Of course, there are also a lot of classic Hollywood movies on circus and clowns. The Marx Brothers’ “At the Circus”, Walt Disney’s “Dumbo” or Paramount Picture’s “The Greatest Show on Earth” are all must see pictures from golden era of Hollywood studios. But I am sure that all of you have already seen these movies. I am writing for the Taipei ‘s crème de la crème after all. To please someone as refined as a Revver’s reader, one must come up with more than just Hollywood…

The Greatest Show on Earth”,這些都是在黃金年代由好萊塢工作室底下出品必看的電影。

Ok, fine…I know exactly where I am going. All this was just a way to let you get a quick ride through the most famous clowns’ appearances in cinema. From the very beginning I wanted to make a little detour by a country I love and which offered us some of the most beautiful films ever made. Let’s go to Italy my dear Revver friends! I am sure you won’t mind stopping for a caffe macchiato while I tell you the few things I know about “Il Maestro” Federico Fellini and his fascination for clowns.

Federico Fellini is one of the most, if not the most, famous Italian film director. His career started right after the Second World War. His first pictures, although very influenced by Neorealism, immediately showed Fellini’s attraction for the world of circus, broken artists and bohemian life. In 1960, his Palme d’Or winning picture “La Dolce Vita” marked the end of his neorealist period. Then came “Otto e mezzo”, “Giulietta degli spiriti” and “Satyricon”, three movies where the clown theme is not very present. In the early 70’s, he started again to shoot circus pictures, with a fake documentary soberly titled “The Clowns”. Almost all his later works are somehow related to artistic performances. From the music hall scene in “Fellini Roma” to “Prova d’orchestra”, which takes on a journey through a very unusual symphonic orchestra rehearsal, there is always a hint of circus in a Fellini picture.

Among Fellini’s works, I must admit I always liked “La Strada” the most. “La Strada” means the road in Italian. The idea of the roaming circus already lies in the title. The movie tells the story of Zampano, a poor artist, who buys the young Gelsomina to her even poorer mother so she can become his assistant in the travelling show he runs town after town. Zampano’s rough personality, he is tearing chains apart in his most famous performance, contrasts with the dreamy and mousy nature of Gelsomina. She is clearly the Auguste while he is a kind of unusual white clown. Together they travel across Italy, stopping where they can to entertain the small people and hopping to make enough money to eat. The movie is obviously very sad, but in the meantime, full of beauty, poesy and humanity.

Now, Revver readers, my only friends, what I will say may sound a bit silly, especially for classy and sophisticated persons like yourselves. But if ever a circus stops in Taipei, please go and have a look… Between the acrobats and the lion tamers, you might get to see a little man with a musical saw and a red nose doing all kinds of stupid stuff. And if you think hard enough, you may even remember you were once a child laughing at the clown. If no circus passes by, a movie and a bit of imagination can also do the trick…
